En fin de journée, le Club Tennis Royal Charles Quint à Ganshoren s’anime au rythme des intenses échanges sur les terrains de padel. Les joueurs enchaînent les coups impressionnants, sous les encouragements de leurs partenaires et les regards curieux des spectateurs intrigués par ce sport en plein boom.
À quelques pas de là, l’ambiance est plus discrète sur les terrains de tennis. Quelques passionnés poursuivent leur entraînement, mais la fréquentation semble moins intense qu’auparavant. “Il y a encore quelques années, à cette heure-ci, tous nos terrains de tennis étaient occupés”, confie Phillipe Martin, président du club. “Avec le padel, tout a changé.”
De nouvelles habitudes chez les adhérents
Depuis l’introduction du padel, les habitudes des membres ont considérablement évolué. “Beaucoup d’amateurs de tennis ont essayé et adopté le padel. C’est un sport accessible, convivial et rapide à prendre en main », constate Phillipe.
Mais cet engouement n’est pas sans conséquences. “Notre club était initialement conçu pour le tennis. Pour répondre à la demande des clients, nous avons dû investir dans la création de terrains de padel. Cela a eu un impact, aussi bien sur notre espace que sur nos finances”, explique-t-il.
Un défi économique à relever
Contrairement au tennis, qui fonctionne avec un système d’abonnements, le padel repose surtout sur la réservation horaire des terrains. “C’est une autre manière de rentabiliser un club”. “Financièrement, c’est intéressant, mais cela change aussi la mentalité du sport. Avec le tennis, les membres avaient une fidélité sur le long terme. Le padel attire plus de joueurs occasionnels.”
Si le tennis favorise une fidélisation des membres sur le long terme, le padel attire davantage de pratiquants occasionnels, ce qui oblige les clubs à repenser leur stratégie. “Il faut réussir à garder un équilibre entre ces deux sports. Certains puristes du tennis regrettent cette transformation, mais il est indispensable d’évoluer avec les tendances actuelles”, reconnait le président du club.
L’avenir du tennis en jeu ?
Face à ces bouleversements, Phillipe Martin reste confiant. “Le padel ne va pas faire disparaître le tennis, mais il nous oblige à repenser notre club. Il y aura toujours des amoureux du tennis, mais il faut aussi s’adapter aux envies de notre nouvelle clientèle”, souligne-t-il.
“Le padel est en plein essor, mais le tennis a encore sa place. Il faut juste trouver le bon équilibre.”
